Case Study: 5 floors of wardrobes for a hidden Georgian gem

When Tiffany came to Blackfields Furniture, the brief was anything but ordinary. Set across the 5 floors of her beautiful Georgian townhouse in Bristol, this project called for a complete joinery package of bespoke wardrobes. Each one needed to be carefully designed to complement the scale and heritage of the property, while also making the most of the nooks and crannies that give a house like this so much character.

From January to March 2026, our team took the project from initial design through to manufacture and installation, creating custom painted wardrobes across all five floors of the townhouse. The key challenge was ensuring that the new joinery felt as though it belonged in the property. Rather than simply installing standard fitted wardrobes, every detail needed to be carefully considered alongside the home's existing fixtures and proportions. The Georgian character of the building called for a sympathetic design approach, with shapes, details and finishes designed to sit naturally within the existing interiors.

This is where bespoke joinery really comes into its own. Each wardrobe was designed specifically for its location within the house, allowing us to make the most of the available space while maintaining a cohesive look throughout. Details such as beading and moulding were hand tailored to suit the property, and the custom painted finish and brass hardware were carefully selected, to create a collection of wardrobes that feel like part of the soul of the property, rather than simply added on.

The wardrobes were professionally manufactured and finished before being installed personally by our team, giving the finished joinery a beautifully consistent appearance across the house. By designing, manufacturing and installing everything ourselves, we were able to maintain control over every stage of the process and ensure that the finished result lived up to Tiffany’s dream.

For us, one of the most rewarding aspects of this project was finding the balance between practical modern storage and the character of a historic home. The finished wardrobes met Tiffany’s day-to-day needs while complementing the existing architecture and furnishings, rather than competing with them. Every home presents its own challenges, particularly period properties where standard furniture rarely makes the most of the available space. At Blackfields Furniture, we love finding creative ways to make bespoke joinery work beautifully alongside the character that makes a property unique.
